Level 1 Caring for Children

Who is this course for?

This course is for any prospective student who is looking to start their education and training in learning more about the childcare sector.

What will you learn?

This qualification encourages an understanding of the knowledge and the skills needed to care for young children. It covers a range of units ranging from supporting babies to play to growth and development of young children. There are also units to help with self-development.

What units will I study?

  • This qualification will consist of a range of units which are chosen on a yearly basis from the following list:
  • Investigating a vocational area
  • Children’s play and leisure activities in the community
  • Sharing learning experiences with children
  • Healthy Living
  • Listening to and talking with a young child
  • Healthy eating for families
  • Confidence building for the young child through play
  • Musical activities for young children
  • Growth and development of young children
  • Practical health and safety when with young children
  • Supporting babies to play
  • Finding out about forest schools
  • Preparing for your next steps
  • Respecting and valuing young children
  • Craft activities for young children
  • Technology activities for young children

How long is this course?

This course is one year.

How will I be assessed for this course?

For this subject, students will be assessed through internally assessed units which will be conducted through coursework and classroom discussions.

Students will learn in a supportive classroom environment for their studies. Students will also be able to undertake independent study as part of this course as lead by their class teacher.

What are the entry requirements for this course?

It is desired that students have gained, or working towards, 5 GCSE's grades 2-9 including Maths and English.

Students must be aged 16-19 to study this course.

What can I go on to do after this course?

This qualification does not qualify you to work with children, but does support you in preparing for your next steps either in training or moving towards obtaining a license to practice and become a qualified childcare practitioner.
