UAH Win Mathematics Competition

It was an extremely  close competition with very few marks between the top 3 teams, but we are delighted to report that our year 8 team were announced as the winners!

University Academy Holbeach was offered the opportunity by Oundle School to take part in a Mathematics competition at their school on Thursday 16th November. We certainly took up the challenge; entering one team of year 7 and one team of year 8 pupils..

The event involved over 10 other schools, including state and private schools from the East Midlands. Thomas Cowley, Stanground Academy, Prince William School, Rutland School and Wellingborough. School all entered teams.

The day started with our pupils working alongside those from other schools to complete group activities. Pupils were put into teams and then allocated rooms that offered different mathematical challenges. These challenges involved various tasks based upon recognising  patterns and relationships in geometrical  situations, before using  algebraic skills to state patterns.

After lunch the competitors were reunited with their original teams of year 7 and 8 pupils. This time the teams were taken into the “Great Hall”; this had been set up with a selection of problem solving tasks. The tasks involved mathematical skills, reasoning and logical thinking. The pupils were given a 4 minute time limit to complete each challenge. Both of our teams competed with excellent attitude and spirit.

It was an extremely  close competition with very few marks between the top 3 teams, but we are delighted to report that our year 8 team were announced as the winners!

Both teams enjoyed the experience and grew in confidence as a result of such a fantastic day!
